Synopsis |
A group of independent dance artists organized a two-day i-Dance Festival in 2004. It made a significant impact on the Hong Kong dance scene, but was not continued in subsequent years. As one of the organizers, Victor Ma picked up the baton in 2009 with the i-Dance Festival of Solo & Improv, hoping to draw focus on new contemporary dance, and to showcase solo and multimedia artists from across the world.
i-Dance 2009 presented seven programmes of solo dance and improv over two weeks. Solo work from Hong Kong, mainland China, Southeast Asia and Europe were invited to this platform; these artists also jammed with dancers, musicians, video and visual artists from Hong Kong in a series of improv sessions (see Improvisation Land XXI & XXII).
Artists were also invited to give workshops, sharing diverse dance forms and approaches to performance. There were also dance-video screenings, round-table discussions as well as some special programmes for public participation, such as the “Environmental Dance” sessions featuring local young dancers. The closing programme of the festival was an Outdoor Improvisation Land.Audience members and dancers had a fun outing together on a Sunday afternoon, to enjoy dance in green surroundings.
