Synopsis |
It is the 4th production of the Association which involved 20 of its 70 member groups to join force with choreographers from Hong Kong and China, 600 dancers and 100-strong choir. The show revealed the change and development of Hong Kong during the 50s and 60s with the story of a local family. The Chinese name of the production means “The Lion Rock”, an iconic landmark of Hong Kong, which symbolizes the tears and laughter of Hong Kong people. Set in different scenes, the story starts with a family living in the poor squatter hut area. Hoi Nam, the mother, touts for business as Suzie Wong in a bar to earn a living; A sang, Hoi Lam’s son, was a poor boy but now earns a fortune. Being a victim of the economic crisis, he goes bankrupt, being down in the dumps and seeing no way out; Ah Chun, Hoi Nam’s daughter, is a kind-hearted girl and pursues a nursing career. She is in the frontline of the hospital in the battle against SARS.
The story spanned across over 50 years, revealing the development of Hong Kong and the way of life of Hong Kong people. Scenes included The A-Go-Go Generation, Dance of Shoe-Shine Boys, Dance of the American Marines and Suzie Wong, Fire in the Wind, Night Club Dance, The Economic Thunderstorm and The Invisible War (SARS) etc.
With the choreograph team made up of 20 choreographers from Hong Kong and China, the dance poem combined the essence of Chinese dance, Jazz, modern dance and Western dance, revealing an “East meets West” personality. Among the playwrights, choreographers, composer and light designers, they all grew up during the 50s and 60s and knew the in-depth side of Hong Kong. The dance poem has also joined force with 600 dancers and a 100-strong choir performed in the final scene. |
