Synopsis |
Reviewers call her "dynamite", "brilliant", "a marvel". Michelle Dorrance is one of today’s most sought after tap dancers and choreographers. She’s guest-starred at the Winter Olympics and Cannes Film Festival, and her staggering list of awards includes the MacArthur 'Genius Grant', a Bessie and – following in the footsteps of legends like Merce Cunningham – the prestigious Jacob's Pillow Dance Award. Dorrance set up her own dance company in 2011, winning a Bessie Award with its first show, for "blasting open our notions about tap" according to the jury citation. She re-invigorates a uniquely American dance form by blending the musicality of tap with the choreographic intricacies of contemporary dance. The company has triumphed at the Kennedy Center, Chicago Contemporary Art Museum, and in Paris and Barcelona. ETM: Double Down, an enhanced version of the Jacob's Pillow Dance award-winninging piece, is a perfect fusion of movement and sound. With a specially designed sonic set that responds to the performers' steps, dancers and musicians led by long-time Dorrance collaborator Nicholas Van Young engage in glorious rhythmic dialogue.
