Synopsis |
Zany! Witty! Quirky! Sweaty! Here comes the highly popular contemporary dance troupe from Tokyo! Coming in all shapes and sizes and dressed in their trademark Japanese school uniforms, the all-male Condors is famous for their zany mix of comedy sketches, strange films, blasting retro rock music and storytelling, held together with precise calculation by exuberant high-energy dance. The wild and unique performance and many humorous body expressions are unfolding a new style of entertainment which led to regularly sold-out houses not only in Japan (where they set a theatre record when all tickets were sold in just 14 minutes) but also across the globe, and in the process have won swathes of critical acclaim.\r\n \r\nIn GRANDSLAM, each scene seems randomly connected, but coming to the end, it will bring back your own nostalgic memories and remind you of the things that are important for life. The Condors presents a happy-go-lucky performance for you. Like our life should be! Fasten your seat belt and enjoy the ride!\r\n \r\n“An irrepressible, irrelevant brunch of nicely ill-assorted sizes and presence, the men were impressive in their comic timing and knowledge of dance styles.” ------ New York Times\r\n \r\n“Incomparably unique company; that is outreaching Condors. Freshly and easily, the company breaks through the boundary of category and existing concept.” ------ Dance Magazine, Tokyo\r\n \r\nAbout Ryohei Kondo (Founder, Artistic Director & Choreographer of CONDORS)\r\nTokyo-born Ryohei Kondo grew up in Peru, Chile, and Argentina where rhythm is a way of life. In 1996, he founded Condors which have become well-known for its satirical treatment of Japanese pop culture. Kondo\'s richly varied stagings featuring a rapid succession of scenes and skillfully interspersed dance, video, live music, puppetry and drama. His unique style of choreography and performances led to many invitations for collaborating in other media including TV, film and fashion; Condors has appeared on several programmes on Japan’s national TV station NHK and were invited to be catwalk models by Yohji Yamamoto, while Kondo has choreographed for BEAMS’s commercials and Takashi Miike’s movie. In 2004, Kondo was awarded Shuji Terayama Award at the Asahi Newspaper Performing Arts Awards for his choreography. He currently lectures at the Yokohama National University. |
