Synopsis The Festival Local Focus presents the world premiere of In Search of the Grand View Garden, featuring the strongest production line-up in the Festival’s history: CCDC artistic director Willy Tsao teamed up with veteran Hong Kong cinematographer Henry Chung to transform the acclaimed eponymous dance production into a 3D dance film. With Chinese literary classic Dream of the Red Chamber as blueprint, Hong Kong’s cityscape as backdrop, and classical Chinese narrative ballad pingtan as the soundtrack, the site-specific dance video is a mix of tradition and modern, classic and contemporary, merging modern dance with everyday life. The film was selected for screening at the Short Film Corner of Cannes Film Festival this year.

The Festival has also commissioned dance films by artists from the Greater China Region. Elegy is a production by independent director Rita Hui whose work was selected by the 14th Busan International Film Festival. The experimental stage production Lucy is now a film created jointly by Chinese emerging artist Er Gao and Yang Tao, the cinematographer of cult queer film Lan Yu. Beijing Dance/LDTX dancer Will Guo teamed up with his former classmate from Guangdong Dance School Li Zhongye to produce the heartwarming One Day. Emerging choreographer Li De works with veteran cinematographer Jim Fok to create Let’s Say, a dance of the ‘hand’ commenting on the phenomenon of phubbers. Renowned Hong Kong choreographer Yuri Ng brings together nine outstanding Hong Kong male dancers to reveal their stories behind the stage in DANzING BOYz & VIDEOz. There is a Place is the exciting outcome of the collaboration between CCDC and the Dance House of Glasgow. Sang Jijia, a Tibetan dancer-choreographer based in China, travelled to Scotland to make this 7-minute dance film with Katrina McPherson and Simon Fides in the Highlands. Combining exquisite movement and stunning landscapes, the film takes the viewer into his pure world of dance.
