Synopsis |
ASTONISH ME! And why not? on this special 25th Anniversary season from the School of Dance? This May season takes it inspiration from the challenge the great Russian impresario Sergei Diaghilev supposedly threw out to the young Jean Cocteau way back in 1915. And that's exactly what the School has done: taken up the challenge to celebrate the Academy's 25th Anniversary with a programme that stretches the imagination and reaches for the stars! The incomparable William Forsythe - one of the world's real creative geniuses - has given permission for us to perform a section of his seminal Enemy in the Figure: a special gift indeed! As well as bringing Enemy to production, guest artist Ana Catalina Roman - herself a long-term dancer with Forsythe's Ballett Frankfurt - has restaged her The Secret Bob, a rather wry - but nonetheless gentle - look at what it means to be a creative artist. We have an excerpt from Australia's top choreographer Graeme Murphy's dynamic Free Radicals. And! one of Mainland China's leading choreographic lights (and a graduate of the School) Zhao Ming - of Acrobatic Swan Lake fame - returns to the School to a major challenge: to create a celebratory work for 36 students from across all three departments! Another world-class graduate returning 'home' is Anh Ngoc Nguyen, who will be creating a new work for the Ballet students. Like our other choreographers, Ahn comes with a distinguished pedigree, having been a member of Wayne McGregor's internationally renown Random Dance, and winner of the prestigious Spotlight Award for the Best Male Artist (Modern) at the UK 2008 National Dance Awards. The programme is rounded off by the beautiful Ambuscade, first performed in 2005, and reworked by our Head of Chinese Dance Sheng Peiqi in collaboration with Hong Kong choreographer Mui Cheuk-yin (who is also a graduate). So quite a sensational line-up, where past and present, Hong Kong, China and the world, masters and our young apprentices, graduates and those graduating - all come together in what will be a really impressive anniversary performance! This event is part of the Academy's 25th anniversary celebration |
