Synopsis |
Poi Dance (fire twirling dance) originates from the Indigenous cultures in the Pacific and is common in Hawaiian and Maori traditional performances. Poi are a pair of arm-length chains with loop handles attached to one end and a bundle of wicking material on the other. For practice and development of tricks as well as at these workshops, practice Poi consists of a fabric streamer with a light weight, such as a beanbag, at the leading end. Gushiken, the workshop instructor, is a graduate of The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and currently works as a freelance practitioner for both back stage and onstage performances.
