Biography Helen Lai joined CCDC as a founding member in 1979 and was the Artistic Director from 1985 to 1989. She has been its Resident Choreographer since 1991. Lai has also choreographed for numerous dance companies outside Hong Kong including Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taipei. Her most notable works include Nine Songs (collaborated with Oscar Award-winning Composer Tan Dun and Art Director Tim Yip), Revolutionary Pekinese Opera (Millennium Mix) (with the music of Otomo Yoshihide), Testimony (on the life and music of Dmitri Shostakovich) and HerStory (inspired by nüshu, a disappearing language created
by women). Lai was awarded "Choreographer of the Year" from the Hong Kong Artists' Guild, "Badge
of Honour" from the Queen of the United Kingdom and the "Medal of Honour" from the Hong Kong SAR Government. She is a five-time Hong Kong Dance Awards winner as well as the winner of the "Distinguished Achievement Award" from the Hong Kong Dance Alliance. She also received the "Award for Arts Achievement (Dance)" from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
