Biography
Surianty Liu Chun Wai, member of the International Dance Council of Unesco and Honorary Life Member of the Philippine Folk Dance Society and the Hong Kong Writers and Artists Association, founded the Hong Kong South East Asia Dance Troupe, the Indonesia South East Asia Dance Troupe, and the Guangzhou South East Asia Dance Troupe. She is President, Artistic Director and Choreographer of the three companies.
Madam Liu, born in Indonesia, under the famous gurus she studied Sumatran dance, Balinese dance, Ballet, and she also went to Malaysia to study Malay court dance under doyenne of the dance, Adnan. In 1957 and 1959 she performed in Moscow and Singapore respectively as a member of the Indonesian Delegation. Over the past decades she has devoted herself to study and promote Southeast Asian dances by creating and choreographing more than seventy dances.
Madam Liu has held a number of public positions, including Chief Adjudicator of Oriental Dance at the annual School Dance Festivals, and the Programme Coordinator and Honorary Adviser to the 10th Festival of Asian Arts in Hong Kong. She actively facilitates cultural exchanges among Hong Kong, Guangdong, Singapore, Malaysia by providing seminars and workshops on South East Asian dances.
