||Two and a half Years ago, we brought to dance lovers in Hong Kong a butoh interpretation of the Kowloon Walled City - the Second Tower of Babel with Kae Ishimoto and her Japanese group members as well as butoh dancers of Hong Kong, David Leung, Grad Leung and others assembled by the Asian People’s Theatre Festival Society. It took place at the Hong Kong Film Culture Centre located in a Tokwawan Factory Building and its rooftop. Its surrealism, neo-violence, dark and yet full of vigour representation of the Walled City and the contemporary city of Hong Kong made it a memorable production and unforgettable experience. It was a prognostication of the Umbrella Rebellion which was to come.|
Now with Kae and her Japanese colleagues Kazuya Zenzai, Dai Matsuoka, Hong Kong’s David Leung, Grad Leung, Woo Mei Bo and new and old collaborators brought together again by the Asian People’s Theatre Festival Society will bring you Tower of Babel On the Sand – Sham Shui Po as part of the 4th Butoh Butoh Festival. This will be another feast of Butoh dance and movements in tune with the down-trodden, the despair and the hope and rebellion of the marginalized in this old district of Kowloon. The performances will take place at the rooftop of a factory building, now known as the JCCAC.
